Raise your hand if your kids are telling you (or showing you) that they’re bored at home. See my hand waving in the air??
School’s out, many recreational options are being forced to shut down, and we’re barely into the Christmas holidays. Many of us are anticipating a couple of weeks (or more) with bored kids hanging around the house, and that can lead to arguments, bad feelings, and frustration.
If that’s your situation, too, this may help: I went looking for some inspiration for encouraging the kids to get fresh air, and I hit the motherlode! Here’s a really excellent list of over 100 different ways to get kids outdoors in the winter:

This collection of ideas goes far beyond the basics of sledding and building snowmen. There are some really creative and fun ideas here, and many of them are perfect for older kids.
Here are just a few of the ideas that I love – and I’m especially glad that some of the activities work well in the dark. The nights are very long right now, but kids still need to get outside!
- Frozen suncatchers
- Christmas light walk
- Garland for the birds
- Make evergreen tea
- Colored icicles
- Winter scavenger hunt
- Flashlight tag
Each idea has a full explanation and instructions where necessary. Have a look at the complete list — this may make all the difference to your sanity during the holidays and beyond!! 😉
