If you’re one of the lucky MacBook Pro owners that purchased an upgrade to the new MacBook Pro line from Apple, you may have noticed that Leopard Panther comes preloaded already! Although unannounced at the time of this writing, Apple has now confirmed this preloaded OS for the new MacBook Pro line of laptops. As previously speculated, the new MacBook Pro line for 2008 (chosen by Apple internally at the time) came with Leopard Panther as its preloaded operating system, but the line for 2009 (chosen by Apple externally at the time) will come with Snow Leopard instead of Leopard Panther.

Adobe’s new Global Lens Correction feature strips significant noise from photos. It works based on statistics of unnatural patterns instead of being developed as a lens simulation. The results aren’t always spot on, though. In the final release, you need to specify certain areas of an image to apply the correction.

San Francisco-based RedEye’s latest version has a new, multipurpose tool, Layer Enhancer. It works right out of the app, which makes it useful for many tasks, plus it’s available as an effects panel (it’s under Layers in the previous version) and presets. But it doesn’t really do quite enough yet, to include tweaking your contrast or saturation.

If you’re tired of Photoshop’s increasing cost, there’s now a free U.S. edition of Elements. It’s easy to see exactly what is included: eight image styles, drawing tools, vectors, and adjustments—the basics. Since the price is free, comparison shopping is easier. The $79 price should discourage freelancers or students from buying it, since it’s obvious it’s not “the real thing.”

Once you have a foreign image in a format like TIFF or Photoshop Markup (.psd), there are new tools to make it searchable. While the new search features were announced in August, you need to have Photoshop CS5 Extended or the latest Photo Studio and Photoshop Elements 14 to see them. If the image contains text, it’s also searchable by that text.

Photoshop has always been a powerful tool for photographers, and it continues to grow more powerful with each release. The standard edition of Photoshop CS6 is a great tool for anyone working with photos, with or without a larger library of adjusted photographs. The latest version of the program makes working with RAW files even easier, and also makes fixing minor problems (dust and scratches, as well as other errors) more straightforward. The downside of Photoshop CS6 is its complexity, which remains one of the flaws in the program. The further you go through the options, the more you find yourself getting curious about things. You might wonder what Auto-Contrast: Auto does and how exactly you can use the various masks to make your images look both better and polished. There are certain adjustments that I’d love to see in the future of Photoshop, though. Maybe a Facebook/Twitter button just below the preview area of the image so you can share a photo directly from Photoshop. For all its aesthetic appeal, adjusting that slider and seeing your photo on the web is still a bit of a hassle.

What is Photoshop’s Blending Options?
Adobe uses blending modes to darken or lighten an area of the image. Photoshop uses 16 blending modes, which are similar to blending modes used by other graphics programs. When you select the Blending Mode option from the Effects menu in the Photoshop toolbar, a set of options is displayed. You can blend layers or duplicate, or replace, the active layer with distorted or uniform layers.

I have already used Blending Modes in other graphics applications. What does Photoshop offer?
Standard blending modes are truthfully listed as blending functions, where the two values (color components, intensity, and grayscale) are totaled together to produce an output; the truth value is simply a function of which of these components is the most dominant. If you select both a foreground and background layer, the eyedropper will move on its own. If you activate the eyedropper on a selected area of a layer, all of the colors of that area are displayed in the eyedropper tool and are the sample you paint. The eyedropper tool is a history saver for a single color.
