The urinary tract is one of those body systems that we don’t think about until there’s a problem, and then we think about it ALL. THE. TIME.
Fluids go in and fluids go out, but when there’s an issue – from dehydration to bladder infection to kidney stones – it can be very uncomfortable.
Fortunately, there are daily steps that we can take to support the health of our kidneys, bladder, and the rest of the urinary system.
What Is the Urinary System?
The urinary system consists of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Its principal function is to maintain the volume and composition of body fluids. The urinary system maintains adequate fluid volumes, pH and chemical balances, and electrolyte levels. Urine is formed in the kidneys by a blood filtration process and carries the waste as well as excess fluid to the ureters and eventually to the bladder, where it is stored until it is expelled from the body via urination.
Dehydration: It’s More Common Than You Think!
Most people are unaware that they are in a constant state of dehydration. Lower-than-optimal intake of fluids takes a toll on overall health but especially impacts kidney health.
You should aim to drink half of your weight in pounds in ounces of water per day. For example: If you weigh 160 pounds, aim for at least 80 oz of water or other clear, caffeine-free fluids every day.
Essential Oils for Renal and Urinary Support
In addition to making sure you are consuming enough water, there are essential oils that can provide support. Oils can be helpful in supporting the body’s detoxification processes, supporting healthy organ function, reducing inflammation, and soothing discomfort.
Here are my top essential oil recommendations for renal and urinary support:
Internal use: There are several options for internal use. You can use doTERRA softgels or place drops of essential oil in a veggie capsule and take with water. Alternatively, you may place a drop of oil directly under the tongue or place a drop or two in water and drink it. Use daily, or every 12 hours for acute issues.
Topical use: Place a drop or two of oil over the bladder and/or kidneys (lower abdomen or lower back). Use a carrier oil as needed to prevent sensitivity. Massage in gently. The spine and bottoms of feet are also excellent areas for topical application.
Aromatic use: Diffuse oils in the bedroom throughout the night for nighttime concerns such as bed wetting.
